More like Harry Potter and the World of Tomorrow.

I know it's blasphemy to do anything but drool over every new Harry Potter preview, but from the looks of the latest Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire trailer, the boy wizard's next adventure will be more CG than it is live-action. Sure, one of the pleasures of J.K. Rowling's books is that she presents us with creatures that defy imagination, but they're only interesting insofar as they seem to be integrated into the real (Muggle) world. The more video-gamey the effects, the less tangible her elaborate fantasy becomes. CG run amok always reminds me of Sky Captain, where it was sorta the point, or worse, those cruddy Spy Kids sequels. But Harry belongs in a league of his own.

I mean, where is Ray Harryhausen when you need him? Maybe I'm old-fashioned (I felt the same way about King Kong, getting all nostalgic about the stop-motion stuff), but as long as CG still costs a fortune, why not just build the damn things? Why can't they made a pirate-ship model and film that bursting out of the water, rather than giving us something that looks like it was rendered for a Myst game?

The last thing I want is a Harry Potter movie that looks like something that Van Helsing hack Stephen Sommers would pull out of his sleeve. Come on, people, the franchise was moving in the right direction with Alfonso Cuarón. Let's keep up the momentum. From the opening shot of the trailer, in which a pegasus-drawn carriage sweeps across the sky, we're bombarded with digital effects work. And not the subtle kind either. I'm all for gorgeous matte work, but compare that all this swooping camera stuff, and it's impossible to be taken in by anything other than the very CG-ness of it all (just look how wonky Hogwarts looks over Hagrid's shoulder in the shot sampled above).

As far as I can tell, everything Harry Potter fans have been so eagerly waiting to see brought to life about this fourth book -- pirate ships, mermaids, dragons, the Triwizard bandstands -- has been rendered in video-gamey CGI. Then again, they got away with it in Lord of the Rings, so why can't Harry Potter do the same, you ask? Well, that's the style Peter Jackson chose -- schlocky, B-movie theatrics overloaded with CG -- and he stuck with it from the beginning. But the first three Harry Potter movies were more classical in their approach, using CG to embellish rather than overpower.

In fact, the series' CG elements have often been its weakest points, like Dobby and that weird werewolf from Prisoner of Azkaban). I can only hope that the stunts featured in this trailer are the exception rather than rule for Harry's fourth year at Hogwarts. This book was always the one with the greatest potential to make an unbelieveably amazing movie. It'd be a shame if it were merely unbelievable instead.
