Over the Hedge
Sometimes I miss traditional hand-drawn animation. Over the Hedge is the perfect example. Why are these adorable little forest critters (a turtle, two possums, a skunk, a chipmunk, and a family of porcupines) computer-animated? When the movie comes out, the filmmakers will talk about how tough it was animating everybody's fur or getting the quills just right, when the truth is, their animated animals look like escapees from some 1995 After Dark screensaver.
It's not the style that's the problem. I love the liberties the design team took with their largely-rodent cast (between Walt Disney and Don Bluth, we've gotten a little too comfortable with the way our cartoon rodents should look), but I don't like to be distracted by how primitive the CG makes everything seem. My only hope is that the film will be engaging enough that we never even notice its artistic shortcomings.
The trailer is certainly as clever as we could possibly want. It begins with the animals contemplating a newly erected hedge separating their tiny wild habitat from a brand-new suburban development on the other side, and then out pops a savvy raccoon to explain the situation to 'em. What follows is a witty tutorial on how humans handle their food from the raccoon's perspective, ending up with the revelation that "the stuff they don't eat, they put in gleaming silver cans, just for us."
This is the way trailers should be, setting up one or two situations from the movie rather than summarizing the whole darn thing. I just wish the animation looked better (I also have my concerns about how well the celebrity voices match the animals they play, but the preview makes it over before I have much chance to judge).
