Syriana
I can't decide whether I like the poster or the preview more for Stephen Gaghan's Syriana. For the past few months, I've been working my way into festival and test screenings of the fall's most anticipated films, ticking off the blockbusters that might qualify as Oscar contenders (Walk the Line, Memoirs of a Geisha, Jarhead and The Producers) and so far, I've come away almost empty-handed (I'll make an exception for Brokeback Mountain). Finally, a trailer that suggests a major studio movie of some merit!
We already know Gaghan can tackle complex international concerns, as proven by his script for 2000's Traffic. Now, it just remains to be seen whether he can direct worth a damn (I, for one, opted out of his 2002 debut, Abandon, but even if I'd seen it, I feel confident he would have yet to prove himself in that regard). Unlike Traffic, which Gaghan adapted from a British miniseries, Syriana is based on the true-life experiences of its central character, CIA veteran Robert Baer (a bearded George Clooney), but that doesn't worry me in the slightest. In some ways, it's more difficult adapting fiction to the screen than fact, considering that most audiences are far more familiar with other books and movies than they are with the particulars of politics, history, and the private lives of your average biopic subject.
So what can we expect from Syriana? The trailer makes it clear that this isn't your average braindead conspiracy thriller. Rather than hinting at the shady goings-on behind closed doors, it takes us right into the boardrooms, private jets, and desert turf of the powers said to control the world's oil supply. The footage doesn't look as polished as Traffic did (there's none of that crazy tinting, for instance), which could be a good thing if Gaghan wants to keep us focused on story rather than style. As far as I can tell, this trailer does an excellent job of setting up the movie without giving away anything that would compromise its secrets.
We learn that Clooney, Matt Damon, Jeffrey Wright, Chris Cooper, and Christopher Plummer all make appearances, and it even gives us a few worst-case projections on what could happen if America lost its oil supply. If I had to pick a favorite moment, it would be Damon's smart-ass monologue ("You want to know what the business world thinks of you? We think 100 years ago you were living out here in tents in the desert chopping each other's heads off, and that's exactly where you're going to be in another 100," and then, without missing a beat, "So yes, on behalf of my firm, I accept your money."). It's not the insult, obviously, but the hypocrisy that makes the point, and my only fear for this insanely ambitious movie is that Gaghan will give in to cheap satire rather than letting the characters hang themselves.
Getting back to the poster for a second, this is a thing of beauty. It shows Clooney like we've never seen him before. Gone is the GQ poster boy we're used to, replaced with a bearded captive, his necktie loosened out of something other than cocky self-assurance -- exhaustion? panic? The image has swiped out his eyes, covered his mouth. As far as customary floating-head movie posters go, there is something very wrong with this picture, which can only be a good thing for a movie that wants to be taken as seriously as Syriana.
