You would cry too if it happened to you.

I don't know about you, but my favorite Spielberg story is the one about how the rubber shark sucked so bad in Jaws that the greenhorn director had to shoot around it and, by keeping it hidden, actually arrived at a more effective horror movie. From his first blockbuster, Spielberg understood the secret of suspense, and he's been using that technique ever since. In fact, the entire War of the Worlds trailer campaign can be summarized by that tactic: Delay the money shot ... as ... long ... as ... possible.

The trick is to tease us by showing the looks of wide-eyed wonder on the characters' faces instead and let our imagination do the rest. By the time Spielberg's ready to reveal the payoff, the characters' reactions have already told us how we're supposed to respond. Now, to be clear, all movies feature reaction shots in the midst of intense or scary scenes, but it's Spielberg who has mastered the art of lingering on reaction shots before he even reveals the action that inspires them (the paleontologists staring slack-jawed at the dinos in Jurassic Park, for instance).

The first War of the Worlds teaser is a perfect example. After setting the stage with shots of humans bustling about big-city backdrops (with something the narrator calls "infinite complacency"), the trailer descends on a sleepy suburb. An ominous lightning storm crackles over the hills in the distance, and the sequence of reaction shots begins as the alarmed locals peer from their bedroom windows, step out into the streets, and gawk at the strange phenomenon. No sooner have they assembled in the street than a death ray blasts the screen to bits and the War of the Worlds logo takes over. The result is an effective mood builder that sets the movie's tone of dread and destruction, while showing us nothing of the actual film (in fact, the scene we've just witnessed was shot especially for the trailer and doesn't appear at all in the finished film).

The second teaser (an expanded version of the minivan-stealing scene featured in the knockout SuperBowl spot) was much more generous in how much it seems to reveal, and yet Spielberg's reaction-shot trick still reigns. This time, we see Tom Cruise, daughter Dakota Fanning and their neighbors leaving their homes to watch the skies (). The Martians' first attack plays out almost entirely on Tom and Dakota's faces between split-second shots of buildings cracking open, glass raining from the skies, and an elevated highway exploding. "Tell me what you saw," Tom's son demands. Next, little Dakota screams at what she sees, and then (in the ultimate the-characters-can-see-it-but-you-can't tease) Tom covers her eyes. Get it? The preview's telling us that the movie is that intense, and you'll have to pay to witness the full extent of the spectacle.

The ante just keeps going up. Two months before the movie's release, Paramount released a third teaser. In a genius stroke, this one opens with with Tom Cruise staring the audience straight in the eyes, daring them to watch what's coming: "Keep your eyes on me," he says. "Now you're going to look around, but you're not going to, are you?" Cut to Dakota, scared shitless. By this point, after all the buildup of the first two teasers, we'd give anything to see what he's trying to hide from her, and now it's Spielberg's chance to pay it off. [Note: The perfect preview for War of the Worlds would begin as this one does and feature the next minute or so of screen time -- no more -- as it appears in the film with no additional setup (we all know the War story anyway). Though impressive, the third teaser actually borders on giving away too much.]

What follows are scenes of pure panic as earth's remaining survivors run for their lives, and then (of course) the expected series of pre-action reaction shots (Tom turns around to see something scary, Dakota can hardly bear to look, followed by a full-frame shot of her staring directly into the camera). Finally, the carnage begins with a ferry overturning, a tripod scooping refugees from the water, the freeway exploding, fighter jets shooting missles, a crashed airliner, semi-trailers falling onto houses, etc., all scored to a variation on Orff's "Carmina Burana" (the most overused bit of trailer orchestration, perfect for action-movie montages).

Just as abruptly as it started, things quiet down for an even more terrifying sequence in which we find Tom and Dakota trapped in a basement. For the first time in any of these trailers, we see reaction shots used as they normally occur on film -- in reaction to something we've already seen happening. Blink and you miss it, but that's the silhouette of an alien passing just behind Tom and Dakota. Then comes the above-mentioned reaction shot, followed by one last spine-tingling shot of an alien creeping past Dakota's shoulder (in classic raptors-in-the-kitchen fashion).

By contrast with the teaser campaign, the final theatrical trailer hardly even deserves a mention (heck, even the movie itself can hardly compete with the elegant arc of these three teasers). This last trailer is little more than another "Carmina Burana" rip, heavy on the family-in-peril setup, featuring striking images from throughout the film cobbled together in the desperate hope that we'll pay to fill in the gaps. But when it comes to those teasers, they're a work of marketing art, admirably faithful to both the tone of the finished film and to the technique that defines Spielberg as a filmmaker.
